About the Wandsworth Drug & Alcohol Action Team (DAAT)
The Wandsworth Drug & Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) was formed in 1995 to co-ordinate the work of local agencies on drug misuse. It brings together Wandsworth Council, the Metropolitan Police, the Probation Service, Wandsworth Teaching Primary Care Trust, and HM Prison Wandsworth. In line with the updated national drugs strategy 2002, “Tackling drugs to build a better Britain”, it aims to reduce the harm that drugs cause to society – communities, individuals and their families.
Key objectives
Wandsworth DAAT has 4 key objectives:
- To prevent today’s young people from becoming tomorrow’s problematic drug users
- To reduce the supply of illegal drugs
- To reduce drug-related crime and its impact on communities
- To reduce drug-related offending through treatment and support and reduce drug related death through harm minimisation
Local drug services
Wandsworth DAAT works with a number of local agencies, both voluntary & statutory, to provide services for people with substance use issues. Details of these services provided can be found on the Careline website www.careline.org.uk

Alcohol related harm
Most people who drink alcohol do so to a
degree, and in a context, that does not put
their own health or wellbeing, or that of
others at risk. There is, however, strong
evidence that many adults in the UK are
drinking to such a degree that they risk serious
ill health, and in such a way that puts the
safety and wellbeing of others at risk.
Government research, designed to measure the incidence of alcohol
misuse, suggests that in Wandsworth around 40,000 people aged
between16 - 64 years are drinking to such a degree that their health is
at risk. The same research suggests that a further 7,000 - 8,000 adults
will be physically or psychologically dependant on alcohol.
From a health perspective, alcohol related ill health is rapidly becoming
one of the most common causes of avoidable death, disease and injury
in the UK.
